Holy Wednesday
The Anointing at Bethany and Judas' Betrayal
Service length: ~3 hours morning, ~3 hours eveningOverview
Holy Wednesday places two contrasting responses to Christ side by side: the unnamed woman who anointed Jesus with costly perfume, pouring out her most precious possession in selfless devotion; and Judas Iscariot, who went to the chief priests and agreed to betray the Lord for thirty pieces of silver. The readings call each believer to examine their own response to Christ - which of these two paths are they walking? By Wednesday evening, the plot is fully formed and Thursday is imminent. The Pascha services continue with the same structure of hours and readings, now carrying the weight of this contrast.

Why is Judas emphasized today?
Holy Wednesday focuses on the events just before the Last Supper: the anointing at Bethany and the agreement of Judas to betray Christ (Matthew 26:6-16). Judas goes to the chief priests and agrees to hand Christ over for thirty pieces of silver. The Church holds Judas before us not to condemn him alone, but because his story is uncomfortably close to human experience. How often do we, knowing Christ, choose comfort or self-interest over faithfulness? Wednesday is a day of honest self-examination, not of pointing at someone else.
What should I be reflecting on personally?
Wednesday places two responses to Christ side by side: the woman who poured out her most expensive possession to anoint Him, and Judas who sold Him for thirty coins. One gave everything; one turned a profit. The Church asks you to sit with the contrast honestly. Where in your own life have you been like the woman - giving something costly out of love? Where have you been like Judas - calculating the cost of following Christ and deciding it is too high? These are not comfortable questions, but Holy Week is not designed to be comfortable.
How does this connect to the rest of the week?
Wednesday is the hinge of Holy Week. The earlier days covered Christ's public teaching - His confrontations in the Temple, His parables to the crowds. Wednesday narrows the focus: the plot is forming, the anointing is complete, and Judas has made his decision. From here, the week moves toward the intimacy of the Upper Room, the darkness of Gethsemane, and the trial. The betrayal that begins on Wednesday sets everything that follows in motion, and it begins with a decision made in secret for a private gain.

What happens in the evening service on Wednesday?
The evening service continues the structure of hours, now carrying the weight of the betrayal narrative. The readings move into the later Gospel chapters - the plot against Christ thickens and the Passover draws near. There is a shift in atmosphere that many Coptic Christians who attend every year describe as palpable: by Wednesday evening, the lightness of the early week is entirely gone. Thursday is now imminent - the Last Supper, the washing of feet, and the arrest in Gethsemane.
Why do people keep coming back to these services throughout the week?
Attending Pascha services daily is not primarily about gathering information - you are not reading a story but accompanying someone through it. Each day adds a layer. The cumulative effect of hours of prayer, Scripture, and doxology across the week does something to a person that no single service can replicate. Many Coptic Christians who grew up attending Holy Week every year describe it as the spiritual anchor of their entire year. Coming for even a few hours each day, even as a newcomer, places you within that long tradition.
