Palm Sunday - known in Coptic as Hosanna Sunday - marks the beginning of Holy Week. The Church celebrates Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey as the crowds laid palm branches and garments before Him, crying out 'Hosanna to the Son of David!' (Matthew 21:9). In Coptic parishes, the congregation processes around the church carrying palm branches and candles, singing joyful hymns. The children lead the procession, echoing the children who praised Christ in the Temple. This day also begins the great Pascha prayers in the evening - the tone shifts from joy to solemnity as the Church enters the most intense week of the liturgical year.

Why are people holding palms?
The palm branches recall the crowds who spread palms and garments on the road as Christ entered Jerusalem (Matthew 21:8). In Coptic parishes, palm fronds are often woven into crosses before the service and distributed to the congregation. Holding them is a way of participating in that original procession - placing yourself among the crowd that welcomed the King of Kings. The palm cross you receive is typically kept in the home throughout the year as a reminder of this day.
What does "Hosanna" mean?
"Hosanna" comes from the Hebrew "Hoshiah-na," meaning "Save us now" or "Grant salvation, we pray." When the crowds cried it at Christ's entry, they were using an ancient royal acclamation - recognizing Him as the promised Messiah-King who would bring salvation. In the liturgy it functions both as an acclamation of Christ's kingship and as a prayer. The Coptic hymn chanted during the procession - "Osanna khen niy-et-chosi" - carries this same double meaning: praise and petition together.
Why does this feel joyful compared to the rest of the week?
Palm Sunday is the one moment of public triumph in what is otherwise a week of increasing sorrow. The Church celebrates Christ's royal entry before accompanying Him to the Cross. Think of it as the last joyful gathering before the weight of the week descends. The palm procession, the bells, the children leading the way - all of this is real and intentional joy. But it is shadowed: the Church knows where this triumphal entry leads. By Sunday evening, the mood will have already shifted.
What is the significance of the procession?
The procession around the church re-enacts Christ's entry into Jerusalem. The children lead, echoing Matthew 21:15 where children in the Temple cried "Hosanna to the Son of David." Walking behind the cross with palm branches is an act of following Christ - not merely a ceremony but a statement of intent. This procession begins the journey that Holy Week asks every believer to take: following Christ from the gate of triumph through the Passion to the Resurrection.
What is happening during the liturgy itself?
The Divine Liturgy on Hosanna Sunday follows the regular Coptic liturgical structure but with Palm Sunday readings and hymns. The Gospel accounts of the triumphal entry are read from all four evangelists. The Evlogimenos ("Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord") is chanted in Greek, and the full procession takes place with palm branches and candles. Palm crosses are distributed to the faithful. This is the last Divine Liturgy celebrated before Covenant Thursday - so receiving Communion today carries particular significance.

Why is there a General Funeral?
The General Funeral is a communal commemoration of all the faithful departed. Rather than mourning any one person, the Church gathers on Palm Sunday to commend all its departed members to God before Holy Week begins. It expresses the Church's belief that she is one Body spanning the living and the dead. Before entering the week of Christ's own death and resurrection, the community gathers its whole family - visible and invisible - before God.
Why are funerals not done during Holy Week?
Once Holy Week begins on Sunday evening, the Church suspends individual funeral services until after the Resurrection. The entire liturgical focus of the week is the death and resurrection of Christ. Private funerals are not omitted out of indifference - any person who dies during Holy Week is understood to have departed in an extraordinarily holy season - but the Church's corporate prayer is devoted entirely to the Paschal mystery. The General Funeral on Palm Sunday ensures the departed are not forgotten during this period.
What is the Church preparing us for?
By placing a funeral at the threshold of Holy Week, the Church is honest with us: we are about to enter the week in which God Himself dies. The General Funeral is not morbid - it is pastoral. It reminds us that the Resurrection we are about to celebrate is not an abstract doctrine but the answer to the death we all face. We commend the departed in confidence that Christ is about to defeat the very death that took them.
Why does the tone suddenly change from joyful to solemn?
The moment the Pascha prayers begin on Sunday evening, the liturgical atmosphere shifts entirely. The palm branches are put away. The hymns change from festal to penitential. This is entirely intentional: the Church is inviting you to step out of ordinary time and enter the sacred space of Holy Week. The joy of the triumphal entry is not erased - it is taken up into something deeper. We follow Christ from the city gates toward the garden of Gethsemane, and we must do it at His pace.
What is "Pascha"?
"Pascha" comes from the Hebrew "Pesach" - the Passover. The Coptic Orthodox Church uses "Pascha" to refer to the entire Holy Week observance, not just Resurrection Sunday. Just as the Passover lamb's blood protected Israel from death in Egypt, Christ - the true Passover Lamb - sheds His blood to deliver all humanity from sin and death. The whole week is understood as one Paschal mystery: a single extended participation in Christ's passage through death to life.
What are these repeated readings and prayers?
The Pascha service is organized around "hours" - the ancient canonical hours of prayer that have structured Christian worship since the earliest centuries. Each hour contains a full set of readings: psalms, Old Testament prophecies, Pauline epistles, Catholic epistles, Acts, and Gospels. All these readings are chosen to either foreshadow the events of Christ's Passion or narrate them directly. The effect of hearing so much Scripture across many hours is cumulative and intentional.
Why is "Thok te tigom" repeated so often?
"Thok te tigom" - "Thine is the power, the glory, the blessing, and the majesty, forever Amen" - is the doxology that anchors every service throughout Holy Week. It is chanted after each major reading, dozens of times across the week. This constant repetition is a spiritual discipline: no matter what suffering the readings describe, no matter how dark the hour becomes, the Church returns again and again to the declaration that all power belongs to God. It holds the entire week together theologically.
Do I need to stay for the whole service?
You are welcome to come for part of it. As a newcomer, attending even one or two hours of the Pascha prayers gives you a genuine sense of the week's rhythm. If you can stay longer, the cumulative experience of the prayers is different from - and deeper than - any single hour. If you need to leave, do so quietly during a transition between readings. There is no obligation to attend every service throughout the week, but the more you attend, the more you will understand why Coptic Christians call this the most sacred week of the year.
