Bright Saturday - also called Joyous Saturday or the Saturday of Light - is the day between the crucifixion and the resurrection. While Christ's body lay in the tomb, His soul descended into Hades (Sheol) and freed the righteous who had been held captive since the time of Adam. This event, known as the Harrowing of Hell, is a central teaching of the Coptic Orthodox faith. Christ broke down the gates of death, bound Satan, and led the righteous dead into Paradise. The tone of the services shifts dramatically during this day - the mourning of Great Friday gradually gives way to anticipation and joy. The church begins to be unveiled, black cloths are removed, and the first hints of Paschal light appear. The readings from the Psalms and the Epistles speak of Christ's victory over death. By the evening, the church is prepared for the great celebration of the Resurrection. This is a day of holy waiting - the tomb is sealed, but the power of death has already been broken.

What happened to the darkness and mourning from Great Friday?
The mourning does not lift immediately. Bright Saturday begins before dawn while the vigil is still ongoing, and the grief of Great Friday is still present in the church. The Book of Revelation continues to be read. The tomb is still sealed. But something has shifted in the readings - the Psalms and Epistles of Bright Saturday begin to speak in a different register, of victory anticipated, of the power of God that cannot be contained by death. The transition from mourning to joy is gradual and deliberate. The Church does not snap from black to white overnight; it moves through a long, sacred twilight.
When does the mourning officially end?
The formal shift comes with the Bright Saturday Divine Liturgy celebrated in the early morning hours, typically between 4 and 6 AM. This is the liturgy of the sealed tomb - the last liturgy before the Resurrection is announced. By the time it concludes, the mourning of the week has been held fully, and the church begins its preparation for what is coming. The black cloths start to come down, the icons begin to be unveiled. The word 'Bright' in the name Bright Saturday refers not to what has already happened but to the light that is about to dawn - the brightness that is already breaking, though it has not yet fully arrived.
Why is there a Divine Liturgy in the middle of the night?
This liturgy is celebrated in the boundary hours between night and dawn because it belongs to both - it is the liturgy of the sealed tomb, offered while Christ still lies in the grave, but it is also the last act of waiting before the Resurrection is announced. The Coptic Church has traditionally celebrated this liturgy in the darkness precisely because the women came to the tomb 'while it was still dark' (John 20:1). Coming to the Liturgy at 4 AM is a way of standing with those women - faithful, grieving, not yet knowing that the stone has already been rolled away.
What makes this Liturgy different from the one on Covenant Thursday?
The Thursday Liturgy was the anniversary of the first Eucharist - it looked forward to the Cross. The Bright Saturday Liturgy is offered in the shadow of the empty tomb, looking toward the Resurrection. The readings, the hymns, and the atmosphere are different. Thursday felt like a last supper. Saturday morning feels like a vigil held just before sunrise. The Eucharist on this morning connects the faithful to the body that was buried and is about to rise - receiving Communion in this context is an act of faith in what has not yet been announced but is about to be.
What are the Midnight Praises?
The Midnight Praises (Tasbeha) are an ancient Coptic prayer service consisting of Psalms, doxologies, and hymns organized around the twelve hours of the night. In ordinary life, the Tasbeha is typically prayed in the early morning hours before the Divine Liturgy. On Bright Saturday, the Tasbeha is prayed in the evening as a preparation for the Resurrection Liturgy that follows. It is a service of sustained praise - the word 'tasbeha' means 'glorification.' After the solemnity and mourning of the week, the Tasbeha on Saturday evening begins to turn the heart toward joy. The readings celebrate God's greatness and faithfulness, and by the end, the congregation is ready for what is coming.
What is the mood of this service?
Anticipatory. The Tasbeha on Bright Saturday has a quality unlike any other point in the week - the grief is behind you, the joy is not yet here, and the space between them is full of something that is hard to name. The church is being unveiled and transformed around you as the service continues. Candles are distributed. Bells that have been silent since Great Friday begin to appear. The congregation knows what is coming, and the knowing creates a particular kind of attention - a hush that is not sadness but readiness. It is the feeling of standing just outside a door that is about to open.

What is happening in the church as the service begins?
As the Matins service begins, the transformation of the church that started during the Tasbeha continues. The remaining black cloths come down. The altar curtain is changed. The deacons and priests move with a different energy - there is movement and preparation that the congregation can feel even before anything is announced. Candles are lit throughout the nave. The readings of the Matins service carry the account of the women approaching the tomb and the angels' proclamation. Everything in the service is moving toward a single moment that the entire week has been building toward.
When is the Resurrection announced?
At the appointed moment - often close to midnight - the priest proclaims 'Ekhristos Anesti!' (Christ is Risen!) and the congregation responds 'Alithos Anesti!' (Truly He is Risen!). In that moment, the church erupts: bells ring, cymbals clash, lights that had been dimmed flood the building, and the congregation breaks into singing and embracing. The transition from the quiet of the waiting to the explosion of joy is unlike anything else in the liturgical year. Those who have attended every year since childhood describe it as the moment that resets everything. For a newcomer, it can be overwhelming in the best possible way - a room full of people weeping and laughing at the same time.
What happens in the Resurrection Liturgy after the proclamation?
Following the proclamation, the Divine Liturgy of the Resurrection is celebrated with a joy and energy entirely unlike any other liturgy of the year. The Resurrection hymns replace the mourning hymns. The Paschal troparion - 'Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by death' - is sung repeatedly. The priest leads a procession of the congregation around the church carrying candles, and the greeting 'Christ is Risen - Truly He is Risen' is exchanged between everyone present. Communion is offered to all prepared faithful. By the time the Liturgy concludes near midnight or later, the faithful emerge into the night with an entirely different weight than they carried into the week.
What do I say when someone says 'Christ is Risen' to me?
Respond with 'Truly He is Risen.' That is all. People will say it to you in English, in Arabic ('El Massih Qam - Bel Haqiqa Qam'), or in Coptic. The English response is always welcome. You do not need to know the Coptic or Arabic. People will turn to you, embrace you, and say it with genuine joy - they are not testing you, they are sharing something with you. This greeting replaces ordinary hellos for the next forty days. You are welcome to use it with anyone you meet at church throughout the Resurrection season.
