Prayer and Fasting
How do Copts pray at home during the week?
Copts commonly pray at home through the Agpeya, Bible reading, short prayers for mercy, family prayer, hymns, thanksgiving before meals, and personal repentance. Home prayer carries the life of the Church into ordinary hours.
Seven times a day I praise You, because of Your righteous judgments.
A Simple Weekly Pattern
Many people begin with the Morning Prayer and the prayer before sleep. Others add a short Gospel reading, a Psalm, the Jesus Prayer, or a brief family prayer before dinner. The pattern should be steady enough to continue.
How This Connects To Church
The Liturgy teaches the deepest prayer of the Church. Home prayer helps the person return to that same life during the week. The Agpeya is especially helpful because it gives the Psalms and Gospel a daily place in the home.
If Home Prayer Is New To You
Start with one short hour or even one Psalm and the Lord's Prayer. A small rule kept faithfully is better than a large rule abandoned after three days.
Prayer At Home Extends The Prayer Of The Church
The Agpeya teaches a Christian to return to God throughout the day. Its hours are shaped by the saving events of Christ's life, and its psalms give the believer words when private words are weak.
Home prayer does not compete with the Liturgy. It prepares the heart to stand in church and then carries the memory of worship into ordinary time.
