Prayer and Fasting
What is Nayrouz?
Nayrouz is the Coptic New Year. It begins the Coptic year and is connected with the Calendar of the Martyrs. The feast teaches the Church to begin the year by remembering faithful witness, martyrdom, thanksgiving, and hope.
You crown the year with Your goodness.
Why Martyrs Are Remembered
The Coptic calendar counts from the era of persecution under Diocletian. That memory shapes the year: time is measured by witness to Christ, not by imperial power.
What You May See
Parishes may celebrate with liturgy, hymns, and joyful greetings. Children may receive dates or red fruit as reminders of the martyrs' blood and the sweetness of faithfulness.
How Nayrouz Forms The Year
Nayrouz places martyrdom at the doorway of the year. The Church begins by remembering that time belongs to Christ, and that faithful witness is stronger than fear. The new year opens with thanksgiving because the martyrs' blood became seed for the Church's life.
