Why does the Church ask St. Mary and the saints to pray for us?

The Church asks St. Mary and the saints to pray for us because she is one Body in Christ, and the saints are alive with Him. Asking their intercessions is a request for prayer, not worship.

Pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

The Saints Are Alive In Christ

The Church does not remember saints as distant historical examples only. They are living members of Christ's Body, awaiting the resurrection with us. Their prayers are part of the Church's communion across heaven and earth.

St. Mary is asked especially because she is the Theotokos and first among the saints. Martyrs, apostles, monks, bishops, and righteous people are also asked for intercession because their lives witnessed to Christ and their prayers remain joined to Him.

Christ Remains The One Savior

Intercession depends on Christ. The saints do not replace Him, compete with Him, or form another source of salvation. They pray because they belong to Him. Every true request for intercession is finally directed toward God's mercy.

Why Specific Saints Are Named

Specific saints are named because the Church remembers their particular witness. A martyr teaches courage, a monk teaches repentance, St. Mary teaches humility and obedience, and a healing saint reminds the faithful of God's mercy. The request for prayer becomes a way of remembering that holiness is real and personal.
