Beliefs and Tradition
What does the Coptic Orthodox Church believe about Jesus Christ?
The Coptic Orthodox Church believes that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son and Word of God, true God and true man, who became incarnate for our salvation. He was born of the Virgin Mary, crucified, died, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and will come again in glory.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
True God And True Man
The Coptic Orthodox confession of Christ is not a vague reverence for Jesus as a holy teacher. The Church worships Him as Lord and God. At the same time, she confesses that He truly became human, taking flesh from St. Mary for the salvation of the world.
This is why Christology is central to Coptic faith. If Christ is not truly God, He cannot save. If He is not truly man, human nature is not healed. The Coptic Church confesses the one incarnate Lord Jesus Christ who unites divinity and humanity without confusion, change, or separation.
Christ In Worship
The Liturgy constantly confesses Christ. The Church reads His Gospel, remembers His death and Resurrection, offers the Eucharist as His Body and Blood, and prays to the Father through Him in the Holy Spirit. Icons, feasts, hymns, and fasts all teach the same faith.
The question "What does the Coptic Orthodox Church believe about Jesus Christ?" is answered most clearly in worship. The Church believes what she prays: that the Son of God became man, defeated death, and gives His life to the faithful.
Why This Matters For Every Other Question
Everything else in Coptic Orthodoxy depends on Christ. St. Mary is honored because she bore God the Word incarnate. Icons are venerated because the invisible God truly became visible in Christ. The Holy Mysteries give grace because Christ acts in His Church. The saints are alive because Christ is risen.
