Holy Mysteries
What is the priest’s role in confession?
In Orthodox confession, the person confesses sins to God in the presence of the priest. The priest does not replace God. He stands as witness, spiritual father, and minister of absolution.
Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them.
The Priest Serves Christ's Healing
Christ gave the apostles pastoral authority to bind and loose, forgive and retain, heal and restore. The priest serves within that apostolic ministry. Confession is personal, but it is also ecclesial because sin wounds the person and the Body of Christ. The priest receives the confession in order to serve reconciliation, not to possess private information or stand between the soul and God.
The priest's absolution is therefore part of the Church's sacramental life. It assures the repentant person that forgiveness is being received in Christ's Church, with a father who can guide the next faithful step.
Why Speaking Matters
Sin becomes easier to hide when it remains vague. Speaking plainly helps the person stop bargaining with the conscience. A priest can also help distinguish sin from fear, give practical counsel, assign repentance if needed, and guide the person back toward Communion.
Private prayer remains essential. The faithful should ask God for mercy every day. Sacramental confession gathers that daily repentance into the Church's healing ministry so that the person is corrected, absolved, and restored with pastoral care.
The Fruit Of Confession
Confession to a priest teaches humility, accountability, and trust in Christ's mercy. It also prevents spiritual isolation. A person who confesses regularly learns to name sin accurately, receive correction without despair, and return to prayer, fasting, reconciliation, and Communion with a clearer conscience.
