Why is confession connected to receiving Communion?

Confession is connected to Communion because the Eucharist is communion in Christ's Body and Blood, and sin wounds that communion. The faithful come to Christ in repentance, receive absolution through the priest, and approach the chalice with a conscience being healed by grace.

Repentance Restores Communion

Holy Communion is received for life, forgiveness, healing, and union with Christ. Confession prepares the person to receive this gift truthfully. The person names sin, accepts correction, receives absolution, and returns to the chalice as one seeking restoration.

Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them.

Absolution And Spiritual Fatherhood

The priest's role is pastoral and sacramental. He hears confession as a father, gives counsel, pronounces absolution according to the Church's rite, and helps the person approach Communion with repentance rather than guessing alone.

This protects the person and the Church. The chalice is received within a life of repentance, obedience, and spiritual fatherhood.

A Healthy Rhythm

The rhythm of confession is personal and should be guided by the father of confession. Some people confess often because they are in a season of struggle or growth. Others may have a different rhythm. In every case, Communion and repentance belong together as one life in Christ.
