Language and Chant
Why does one phrase sometimes get repeated many times?
What The Prayers Teach About Repeated Hymn Phrases
Repetition helps a prayer move from the page into the person. The Church repeats words such as mercy, praise, and thanksgiving because they are central to worship and need to be prayed with attention.
Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
Why Repetition Can Help
A repeated line gives everyone a place to join, including children, visitors, and people who do not know the whole hymn. It also allows the heart to catch up with the words. The first time may be listening. The next time may be understanding. The next may be prayer.
How To Receive It
Choose one phrase and pray it honestly. If the same words return again and again, let them gather your attention instead of fighting the repetition.
