Divine Liturgy

Divine Liturgy

What service am I actually attending?

On a Sunday morning, you may be seeing several services joined together: Matins, the Raising of Incense, the Offertory, the Liturgy of the Word, and the Liturgy of the Believers. They can feel like one long service because the transitions are prayerful and often continuous.

The simplest way to orient yourself is to ask what the Church is doing at that moment: preparing, listening to Scripture, offering the gifts, praying the Eucharistic prayers, or distributing Communion.

They continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

A Simple Map

The common Sunday pattern is:

  1. Matins and the Raising of Incense
  2. The Offertory, where the Lamb is chosen
  3. The Liturgy of the Word, where the Church hears the readings and the Gospel
  4. The Creed and Prayer of Reconciliation
  5. The Liturgy of the Believers, where the Eucharistic prayers lead to Communion

That map helps explain why people may say "Liturgy" when they mean the whole Sunday morning, while the Church has more specific names for each movement.

How To Orient Yourself

If you arrive and cannot tell where the service is, ask a deacon

Do not worry if you cannot identify every part immediately. The service becomes clearer through repetition. A useful way to learn is to notice the main movement toward the Gospel, the Creed, the altar, and Holy Communion.
